Dr Paul Fergus is a permanent Research Fellow within the Networked Appliances Laboratory at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). He received a BSc (Hons) in Artificial Intelligence from Middlesex University in 1997, and a Postgraduate Diploma and MSc in Computing for Commerce and Industry from the Open University in 1999 and 2001 respectively. In 2006, he received a PhD in Software Engineering from Liverpool John Moores University. His research interests include Networked Appliances, Home Entertainment Systems, Wireless Communications, Peer-to-Peer technologies, Artificial Intelligence, Semantic Web, Medical Informatics, Medical Devices, and Technology for Health. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed papers in these areas and he is a committee member for several international conferences and journals, which include (IEEE CCNC, IEEE AINA, IIT, CHI, HCI, WISHWELL, IEEE CeHPSA, IEEE Communications Magazine, Multimedia Tools and Applications Special Issue on Advances in Consumer Communications and Networking, ISCC. I am joint chair of the IEEE Workshop on Consumer eHealth Platforms, Services and Applications that is run in conjunction with CCNC. Dr Fergus manages several projects within the Networked Appliances laboratory on ubiquitous computing, middleware, sensor networks, networked appliances, games eHealth and biofeedback. These projects include body sensor networks for the early detection of arthritis, movement analysis in physiotherapy, delivering remote healthcare solutions, whole body interaction, and physical health improvement using wireless sensor networking and games. Prior to his PhD he worked in industry for over five years as a Software Engineer and was directly involved in the development of several national and international projects. He has close links with industry and has worked on projects for Howdens Joinery (consultant for next generation kitchens), Panasonic (developed peer-to-peer middleware system for networked appliances and services), the NHS Learning Disabilities Directorate in Merseyside (performed an evaluation of their use of remote wireless communications and access to their EPEX systems), and Alder Hey Hospital on gaming technology for improving adherence in children suffering with cystic fibrosis.

Dr Mario Kolberg studied computer science at the HTWS Zittau/Goerlitz in Germany. After spending one year in the computer science department at Humboldt University in Berlin he joined the Communications Division in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde in June 1997. In September 2000, he moved to the Department of Computing Science and Mathematics at Stirling University. His research interests include Peer-to-Peer overlay networks, Home Automation, and IP Telephony and Consumer Healthcare. He has lead a project funded by Panasonic (USA) investigating efficiency gains in structured Peer-to-Peer overlays. He is the academic supervisor in a Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Sysnet, a local SME, focusing on developing a Peer-to-Peer overlay for mobile handsets. He is also a Co-Investigator in the ESRC project Interlife where he is working on using Peer-to-Peer networks with 3D virtual worlds in an educational context. He is also a Co-Investigator in the MATCH project, focusing on integrating different network technologies for care in the home. He has for Telcordia Technologies, NJ, USA, a leading presence in home automation, and Avaya Labs Research, NJ, USA, a leading internet telephony technology provider. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and Series Editor for Consumer Communication and Networking of the IEEE Communications Magazine. He is also currently serving as TPC Chair of the IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference (CCNC) 2011..
